A good set of dumbells is a very wise investment and will last you for years, simply wipe down with a damp cloth every so often. If you can afford it and have the space to keep them it is best to buy a range of weights, for women 1kg - 10kg will be enough to get progressing nicely and for men, 1kg - 20kg set would be better.
